PAS Ulama Council says GST is haram

It causes hardship to the people as it has resulted in an increase in prices, says Mahfodz Mohamad.

PASIR PUTEH:
The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is haram (forbidden), PAS Ulama Council President Mahfodz Mohamad has declared.

He said the GST did not fulfil the tax conditions outlined by the party’s Ulama Council.

A report in The Star said Mahfodz Mohamad declared that the GST was forbidden as it had led to hardship on the people due to increases in the prices of goods.

“The GST should only be imposed on those who have excess income,” he said when opening the 55th Ulama Council assembly on Tuesday night.

The report said that in another development, the council passed a resolution to form a task force to explain the proposed amendments to the Shariah law.

The motion was tabled by PAS central working committee member Dr Johari Mat who said that the tabling of the proposed Shariah amendments bill had been largely misunderstood by certain groups.
