The celebrations were brought forward in Malaysia to respect the holy month of Ramadan.

US Independence Day

KUALA LUMPUR:
Decorations of red, white and blue decked the halls of the JW Marriot Hotel Ballroom today as the US Embassy celebrated the American Independence Day.

Amid the star-spangled banners hung portraits of famous American national parks like Yosemite Park and the Fort Marion National Monument.

This was because American national parks are the main theme for the celebrations this year.

Speaking at a press conference here before the event, US Ambassador to Malaysia Joseph Y Yun said the theme was in accordance with the 100th year of US Park services in the States.

“This is a big deal as the western half of US is strewn with numerous national parks.

“The theme is relevant to everyone as it shows off American National Parks and will hopefully increase the number of Malaysian tourists.”

When asked why the US Independence Day – which takes place on July 4 – was being celebrated earlier than usual, Yun said that this was in respect of the coming Ramadan.

“The 4th of July falls during the Ramadan month and we didn’t want to do it during the holy month.”
