PETALING JAYA: Mat Malaya, or Mohd Jusnaidi Omar, has been handed a five-year jail sentence by the Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court for shooting and injuring a mechanic.

Mohd Jusnaidi, who is the brother of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Noh Omar, has been ordered to serve his jail term from the date of his remand last year, as reported by Star Online.

The judge also denied his application for a stay.

Mohd Jusnaidi was accused of shooting and injuring mechanic Alkarim Atun at 5pm on May 6 last year at an air-conditioning centre in Jalan Tuaran Bypass.

Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Husna Abdul Halim had pressed for a deterrent sentence as it was a serious offence under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

Mohd Jusnaidi’s lawyer Ronny Cham, however, sought a minimum jail sentence, stating that his client was released from the main charge under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

The court was told that Mohd Jusnaidi had shot Alkarim, using a pistol, twice on the right leg and this had required surgery.

The accused was apprehended a month after the shooting in Kundasang.

Previously in 2007, Mohd Jusnaidi was charged with drug trafficking. However, he was released by the Kota Kinabalu High Court a year later.
