The Klang Municipal Council (MPK) has started an internal investigation into the fireworks accident at the Pandamaran Sports Complex in Klang on New Year’s Eve.

MPK president Mohamad Yasid Bidin said the probe team consisted of four directors and personnel from departments not related to the event.

“We have set up a panel to investigate the incident. We expect to conclude the investigations in two weeks,” he told reporters at the MPK headquarters in Klang.

Yasid said MPK will take stern disciplinary action against those found to be negligent in handling the event.

“The panel has already started to compile documents and are checking if the standard operating procedures were followed.

“They will also soon start questioning personnel involved in the event and find out what happened at the event.”

Yasid said he had given his statement to the Klang Selatan police this morning on the incident.

When asked about the organiser of the event or whether they had the permits to handle the fireworks, Yasid said he would let police investigate the matter.

“I don’t want to give any statement that will contridict the police investigations.

“Let the police probe independently and we will await their report.”

As for compansation, Yasid said MPK’s committee will decide on that.

Klang MP Charles Santiago, in a statement, said it was irresponsible of the organisers to engage an unlicensed company for the fireworks display.

“The Selangor government must therefore form an investigative team that can come up with safety recommendations and protocol to be used by all local authorities.”

It was earlier reported that MPK did not apply for a permit to hold the fireworks display, which went wrong and injured 10 adults and four children on New Year’s Eve.

All the victims received outpatient treatment at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital here.
The fireworks display was a part of the Gegar Klang Fiesta, organised by MPK, held on Dec 30 and 31.
