Police: The death of 5 Myanmar nationals due to an old spat

Give us more time to complete the investigations, don't make the situation worse, Selangor police chief tells Myanmar.

PETALING JAYA: The case of the five Myanmar nationals who were hacked to death in Serdang, Selangor is not linked to the Rohingya crisis but was an old spat between two groups which began in Myanmar and escalated here, said Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat.

“We are in the midst of investigations and so far, there is no link between this case and what is happening to the Rohingya in Myanmar,” the state police chief told FMT.

He urged the Myanmar government to give police here the time and space to complete the investigations.

Abdul Samah assured the Myanmar goverment that all their citizens here are being treated fairly and given equal attention as Malaysians when it came to safety and security.

“There is no need to create tension as it will make the situation worse,” he said.

On Monday, Reuters reported that masked assailants armed with swords had attacked six Myanmar workers after they had left a factory in Serdang. Four were killed on the spot while the other died in hospital. The sixth victim is still in hospital.

The Myanmar government responded two days ago, with its Permanent Secretary of the Immigration and Population Ministry U Myo Aung saying, that it was temporarily stopping its citizens from coming to Malaysia.

The permanent secretary had also said it is cooperating with Malaysian authorities to track down the killers.

Malaysia has been critical of the Myanmar government over its treatment of the ethnic Rohingya community, claiming that it had caused a ripple effect and forced thousands to flee to neighbouring countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.

Malaysia is now host to thousands of Rohingya refugees who had fled Myanmar, fearing for their safety.
