Donny Meluda, who converted to Islam and now goes by the name of Abdul Rahman Abdullah, was nabbed over the weekend at the Sibu Airport after arriving from Kuala Lumpur, the Straits Times (ST) reported.
Meluda was part of a gang of four responsible for the Kallang slashings in 2010.
The ST reported that Meluda and his three accomplices went on a terror rampage on May 29, 2010, ending only the following morning.
Before killing Indian national Shanmuganathan Dillidurai, 41, the gang robbed and slashed three other men – Ang Jun Heng, 22, Sandeep Singh, 27, and Egan Karuppaiah, 42 – at an open field near Kallang Road.
Meluda’s three accomplices have been arrested and charged but the Sarawakian fled Singapore and was believed to be hiding in Malaysia before an Interpol alert led to his arrest on Saturday afternoon.
ST reported that Meluda was handed over to Singapore police yesterday.
Singapore Police Force (SPF) deputy commissioner Tan Chye Hee described the arrest as “excellent cooperation between the Singapore Police Force and Royal Malaysian Police (RMP)”.
“I would like to express my appreciation to the RMP for pressing on with their efforts to locate the murder suspect… With the invaluable assistance from our foreign law enforcement partners, SPF will ensure that criminals who remain on the run will be brought back to face the full brunt of the law,” he said.
Meluda’s three accompalices, Micheal Garing was sentenced to death. He appealed against the death penalty last year and is awaiting the outcome, Tony Imba was sentenced to life in prison and caning but the prosecution is seeking the death penalty while Hairee Landakwas was sentenced to 33 years’ jail and 24 strokes of the cane.
Meluda will be charged in a Singapore court with murder.
