PETALING JAYA:
Thai officials have made arrangements to question a Malaysian on his alleged links to an individual known as the “Asean drug lord”.

The Malaysian man in question is Kamarudin Awang, who was arrested in Kelantan on Feb 6 by local authorities.

The Bangkok Post quoted Narcotics Suppression Bureau (NSB) commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sommai Kongwisaisuk as saying Kamarudin, who holds dual nationality, was believed to be involved with Lao drug kingpin Xaysana Keopimpha, who was detained at Suvarnabhumi airport on Jan 19 when he arrived on a flight from Phuket.

According to Sommai, Kamarudin is the son-in-law of Marining Jako, another powerful drug leader who operates a network dealing with narcotics from the North and Northeast of Thailand.

Kamarudin is also suspected of having links with Usaman Salaemaeng, an individual on the run from Thai authorities since 2012 after a warrant for his arrest was issued on drug-related charges, the Bangkok Post said.

Sommai however was unable to say when exactly his officials would travel to Malaysia nor was he willing to reveal the nature of their questions when they meet with Kamarudin.

Xaysana’s arrest comes after five years of investigation into a narcotics ring that smuggles drugs to various Asean countries.

Apart from Kamarudin, Thai officials also plan to summon speed racer Akarakit Worarojchroendet for further questioning over a Lamborghini he purchased that cost 20-million-baht.

The Bangkok Post reported Sommai as saying it was believed the luxury vehicle was the property of the Xaysana network.
