PETALING JAYA:
Police confirmed that they had confiscated some chemicals, gloves and shoes from a condominium in Jalan Klang Lama in relation to the killing of North Korean Kim Jong Nam.

Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat confirmed yesterday that a Hazmat (hazardous materials) team made the search in the condominium on Thursday, The Star reported.

He said the team from the KLCC fire station took part in a police drill at the police academy in Cheras prior to the operation that saw police entering the condo unit.

“At this stage, I cannot reveal the details of what was found. Our investigating team is still working on it. We have to wait for our Forensics Unit to conduct an analysis.

“If we find something, we will liaise with the chemistry department for confirmation,” he was quoted as saying by the daily.

Samah admitted, however, that police confiscated various chemicals, several pairs of gloves and shoes from the condo unit.

The chemistry department is expected to release a report to ascertain the types of chemicals found and to determine if other chemicals were used besides the VX nerve agent in Jong Nam’s murder.

According to The Star, police were investigating whether the chemicals were sourced locally or abroad.

“We are looking into this. We haven’t come up with anything. We have never said that this poison, or chemical, was brought in from elsewhere.

“What has been clearly identified these few days is the type of poison or chemical used. But we did not say where it came from,” Samah said.

Jong Nam, who is the eldest son of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, arrived in Malaysia on Feb 6, and was at klia2 to catch a 10.30am flight to Macau on Feb 13 when he was attacked by two women. One sprayed a rapid-acting poison at him while the other covered his face with a piece of cloth.

He sought help at the customer service counter and was treated at the airport clinic but died on the way to Putrajaya Hospital.

Police have since nabbed four suspects to facilitate investigations. They are a Vietnamese named Doan Thi Huong, Siti Aisyah (Indonesia), Muhammad Farid Jallaludin (Malaysia) and Ri Jong Chul (North Korea).

Four other male suspects, all North Korean, fled the country on the same day of the murder. They have been identified as Ri Ji Hyon, Hong Song Hac, O Jong Gil and Ri Jae Nam.

Two other North Korean suspects, Hyon Kwang Song, who is the second secretary with the embassy in Kuala Lumpur, and Air Koryo employee, Kim Uk Il, are also wanted by police to help in the investigations.
