Kit Siang: I’ll defend Gelang Patah seat in GE14

KUALA LUMPUR:
DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has declared his intention to defend the parliamentary seat of Gelang Patah in Johor if he contests in the upcoming 14th general election (GE14) due next year.

Lim said Gelang Patah would be his” first choice”, but that he was willing to give other constituencies serious consideration if there was a strategic reason for doing so.

He thanked Kedah DAP leaders for their “confidence and offer” to contest in the state, during his visit to Alor Setar yesterday.

“I have been struggling with the question whether I should call it a day as I have been in Malaysian politics for 51 years, since the formation of DAP in 1966,” Lim, 76, said.

“If I contest in the 14GE, my first choice will be Gelang Patah,” he said in the statement issued after a walkabout at Kangkar Pulai in the constituency this morning.

Lim was recently the target of posters with the message “Have you seen Uncle Lim Kit Siang?” put up near the DAP’s service centre in Taman Nusa Perintis in Gelang Patah.

Also found nearby was a banner that simply said: “Where is Uncle Lim Kit Siang? Gelang Patah misses you.”

The poster’s full message read: “Last seen in Gelang Patah during 505 promising heaven and earth. Last known hobby was hanging out with people aged 90 and above. Missing for months if not years already. Please help to locate. We miss him a lot.”

The term “505” refers to the last general election (GE13), which took place on May 5, 2013.

Lim said he had been travelling around the country to promote the DAP’s ‘Save and Reset Malaysia’ campaign.

“I call on Gelang Patah voters, regardless of race, religion or even party politics, to lead a national ‘Save and Reset Malaysia’ movement, because we are all Malaysian patriots who do not want Malaysia to degenerate into a global kleptocracy and caught in a trajectory hurtling towards a failed and rogue state.

“This was why I had clocked nearly 20,000 kilometres in the past three months, travelling all over Malaysia, covering nearly all the 13 states, to spread the message for a ‘Save and Reset Malaysia’ and for it to be the crucial issue in the 14GE.”

Lim said he was subjected to attacks from two sides of the BN spectrum.

Calling the “Missing Person” posters and banners a part of an MCA-inspired attack on him, he noted that Umno information chief Annuar Musa had offered a RM10,000 prize, initially, for the best essay or social media posting on the subject “LKS is a racist, anti-Islam and a dictator for 51 years, is it true?”

“But I did not realise that Annuar is such a ‘desperate’ Umno politician evident from his upping his RM10,000 offer to RM50,000 in less than 24 hours,” he added.

Lim hit out at Annuar as a “cheapskate, low-class and irresponsible politician” for making allegations against him and then looking for evidence to substantiate them.

He also accused Umno of creating “a baseless spectre and nightmare” among Malay voters that if Umno were to be defeated in GE14, the “anti-Malay and anti-Islam” DAP would rule in Malaysia, and that all the other parties, whether PKR, Amanah or Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), would be stooges of the DAP.

He pointed to Umno Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil saying during a visit to Felda Mempaga near Bentong that Malays would be side-lined if the people supported the opposition as it would be akin to picking DAP to become the next government.

“But when the Pakatan Harapan presidential council accepted Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia as a member, Umno propagandists and cybertroopers went into overdrive to accuse former Prime Minister Tun Mahathir (who is PPBM chairman) of attempting to hijack Pakatan Harapan,” he said.

He said this was evidence of a “double-faced and unprincipled propaganda offensive” which on the one hand accused him of dominating Pakatan Harapan and on the other hand accused Mahathir of hijacking and dominating Pakatan Harapan.
