Khalid says Parliament attackers should face jail time

Shah Alam MP wants 8 charged under Section 124 of Penal Code which was passed to protect MPs, saying if found guilty they can serve up to 7 years in prison.

Khalid-Samad
KUALA LUMPUR: Khalid Samad today urged the Dewan Rakyat Speaker to seek a more severe charge against those who allegedly rioted inside the Parliament compound last year, citing an act or statute that stipulates a seven year prison sentence.

Khalid, who is also Amanah’s communications director, said this after it was reported that the eight men who attacked him in November were only charged under the Minor Offences Act, where if convicted, they would only be slapped with a maximum fine of RM100.

But the Shah Alam MP said that the eight should be charged under Section 124 of the Penal Code which was passed in Parliament to protect the MPs. If found guilty they can serve a maximum seven-year prison term.

“Do not insult Parliament like this, you (Attorney-General) are making the Parliament look unimportant,” Khalid told reporters at a press conference.

The Shah Alam MP said if the Attorney-General’s Office remained firm in its decision to charge the eight under the Minor Offences Act, then the Dewan Rakyat Speaker should initiate legal action against them.

He added it was because the incident took place at the Parliament grounds and as such, the Speaker could initiate legal proceedings in his capacity as Speaker.

“That means if the Attorney-General’s Office insists in maintaining the charge under the Minor Offences Act (for the eight), Tan Sri (Pandikar) as the Dewan Rakyat Speaker has every right to take legal action,” he said adding that he had sent a letter on the matter to the Speaker today.

He said he was looking forward to a reply from the Speaker.

On Nov 24, a group of men had harassed Khalid, shouting “Hidup Pasir Salak! Hidup Pasir Salak!” The scene turned ugly after one of them fell during a confrontation with security officers.

The mob went after Khalid but the security officers were able to shield him from any harm.

Yesterday, the eight claimed trial to the charges against them under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act, for provoking breach of peace.

All of them, including two believed to be the sons of Pasir Salak MP Tajudin Abdul Rahman – with whom Khalid had a verbal spat in the Dewan Rakyat last November – posted bail of RM500 each with a surety.
