RAUB: The tourism and culture ministry has asked foreign tourism companies to contact local operators in advance to get local tour guides instead of using foreign tourist guides.
Deputy minister Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said this was to avoid any misunderstanding among local tourism operators such as the case that took place in one state recently over their use of a foreign tourist guide.
“Following the commotion, an investigation was conducted and we found it was lawful.
“However, I urge any overseas travel company that wants to bring in tour guides from outside to contact local operators to prevent such a thing from happening again,” she told reporters after launching the Raub Umno Division Wanita, Youth and Puteri Delegates meeting here today.
Mas Ermieyati said the use of these overseas tour guides could be overcome if the country had capable local tour guides who were fluent in numerous languages.
“We are still short of tour guides who can speak English, Mandarin and Arabic, so I hope more locals can master these languages and become tour guides.
“We have many highly educated graduates, so they have the potential to become accredited tour guides where they will get basic salaries and tips,” she said, commenting on a recent newspaper report on the incident.
