KUALA LUMPUR: The wife of missing Perlis activist Amri Che Mat today denied knowing that her husband practised mut’ah, a form of contract marriage not recognised in Malaysia.

This followed allegations by Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, who said yesterday that Amri was a Shia Muslim who practised the form of marriage which can be summarily ended with the consent of both sides.

Amri’s wife, Norhayati Ariffin, said she did not know what mut’ah was.

“I do not know what it is because it doesn’t relate to me.

“All I know is it’s a nikah contract, but I do not know what the contract means,” she said on the second day of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) inquiry into Amri’s disappearance.

When asked by family lawyers if Amri had told Asri that he practised mut’ah, Norhayati said no.

“No, he did not. My brother Nor Hafizal Nor Amri told me that he had practised mut’ah after seeing the mufti.”

Amri’s family lawyer K Muthiah then said Nor Hafizal would be called up for questioning as he had been present during the meeting with Asri at the Perlis Mufti Department on Oct 22, 2015.

When asked by Muthiah if she had her husband’s passport, Norhayati said yes, but it was in Perlis.

Muthiah then told the inquiry that they would produce the passport at the next hearing.

Norhayati also refuted Asri’s denial that he had heard the police shouting at her children, saying the mufti had been in front of the house while the officer in question was at the side of it.

“I saw him (the police officer) when I opened the curtains at my home,” she added.

Suhakam is continuing its inquiry into Amri’s disappearance, as well as that of Pastor Joshua Hilmy and his wife Ruth.

Amri, who co-founded NGO Perlis Hope, has been missing since Nov 24, 2016.

Norhayati previously said that five vehicles had blocked Amri’s car before he was whisked away, just 550 metres from their home in Bukit Chabang, Perlis.

Joshua and his wife, Ruth, meanwhile, were last seen on Nov 30, 2016. A police report was lodged in Klang but the case was referred to the Petaling Jaya police as the complainant said the missing persons lived in Kampung Tunku.
