KUALA LUMPUR: Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN), according to a statement by the specialist hospital.
It said the former prime minister was taken there last night, and is currently being treated for chest infection following a bout of cough.
“Dr Mahathir will be admitted for a few days to allow for treatment and observation,” said IJN, adding that only close family members are allowed to visit him.
This is the second time in 19 months that the PPBM chairman has been warded in IJN for chest infection. The last time he was admitted for treatment and observation was in August 2016.
Mahathir underwent coronary bypass surgery in 1989. He had another heart bypass surgery in 2007.
In 2013 too, Mahathir was admitted for 10 days over a chest infection.
Mahathir, who turns 93 in July, is Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for prime minister, and served the top post for 22 years before stepping down in 2003.
