Lawyer K S Bawani, who became an overnight sensation as an undergraduate when she was told to “listen, listen, listen” by the president of a women’s organisation, will be contesting on a PSM ticket in the 14th general election (GE14).

The Star Online reported that Bawani would contest the Perak state seat of Malim Nawar, which will likely pit her against MCA and DAP.

In a video which went viral in 2013, Bawani was calling for the right to free education when she was told to “listen, listen, listen” by Suara Wanita 1Malaysia president Sharifah Zohra Jabeen during a December 2012 Universiti Utara Malaysia forum.

Bawani, who was called to the Bar in 2016, had turned down the chance to contest in the 2013 general election.

PSM plans to contest five parliamentary and 12 state constituencies.

In Perak, apart from Bawani, brothers Chin Kwai Leong and Chin Kwai Heng will contest the Menglembu and Tronoh state seats.

Other candidates include state PSM committee member R Rani, who will stand in Buntong, while party deputy chairman M Sarasvathy will contest in Jelapang.

For the parliamentary constituencies, Dr Michael Jeyakumar will defend the Sungai Siput seat while party coordinator K Kunasekaran will stand in Batu Gajah.

The Star Online quoted Jeyakumar as saying a three-cornered fight in Sungai Siput would benefit Barisan Nasional (BN).

“There is a high chance of BN winning Sungai Siput if Pakatan Harapan contests there.

“Frankly, we do not want to fight Pakatan. They, however, are just not talking to us over the seat allocation matter and won’t even accept PSM as a junior partner,” he said.
