KUALA LUMPUR: Bandar Tun Razak Umno division chief Rizalman Mokhtar, who tested positive for drug use at a club in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, claims he was set up.
Saying he was surprised by the urine test results, Rizalman, who was caught during a raid by the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), denied taking any drugs.
“I strongly deny being involved in the reported misuse of drugs. If the reports of positive urine test results are true, I am convinced it was a trap intended to destroy my good name,” he said at a press conference at the Bandar Tun Razak Umno division headquarters today.
“I suspect there is a political agenda behind this, but I’m not sure who is behind this. The way the operation was executed was extremely specific and I was taken directly to the Dang Wangi police headquarters.”
Rizalman was caught in a joint raid by the police and the MACC at De Vegas Club on Jalan Imbi about 2 am last Monday.
He claimed to only have “had a coffee” with some friends, and that no alcoholic beverages were served.
“I’m surprised, because I was not high and was feeling normal at the time, which is why I suspect that this is a personal attack,” he said, repeating that he did not know who was behind it.
Asked why he was at the club, Rizalman said he went there only to sing with his friends.
“It was simple entertainment at a licensed establishment, which is not illegal, and I believe a lot of people do the same. I like singing, and I got to sing two or three songs that night,” he said.
Following the incident, a group of grassroots Umno leaders have pressed Rizalman to resign his party and government positions. He is also an independent, non-executive director of Amanahraya.
But Rizalman said he would not resign. “I will use every avenue the law gives me to defend myself and clear my name, my family’s name, and the name of Umno and BN.
“I will continue my service in politics and help BN in Bandar Tun Razak. However, I am also ready to resign all my positions if investigations and the court find me guilty.
“But for now, I will not resign, because I have not been found guilty and my division is 100% with me,” he said.
“I also ask that all the organisations that I am a part of, Umno and BN, are not implicated in this as this is a personal attack on me,” he said.
