Najib calls Dr M a ‘car tester’ with no business sense

The prime minister also accuses Mahathir of neglecting the public transport system, in yet another attack at his main rival.

KUALA LUMPUR: Najib Razak again took potshots at his main rival for the coming polls, this time calling Dr Mahathir Mohamad a “car tester”, in an apparent jibe at the former prime minister’s penchant to test drive Proton cars.

Without naming him as usual, Najib said the “former leader” had neglected public transportation, adding that he lacked commercial understanding that caused Malaysia to fall behind.

“We were clear that we not only had to catch up, but also had to get ahead of the competition and have a public transport system that is truly world class,” Najib said at an event organised by the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida) here today.

In his speech, which was read by Second International Trade and Industry Minister Ong Ka Chuan, Najib also touched on the opposition’s promise to review major government projects.

“The country would be known as a country that did not keep its word. Tens of thousands of Malaysians would lose the jobs they have or are preparing for,” he said.
