LANGKAWI: Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived here in a borrowed aircraft today after his plane suffered a punctured tyre at Subang airport.
Speaking at a high-tea this afternoon, he said he had previously warned his comrades in Pakatan Harapan that one of the ways for a “thief” to win an election was to prevent the candidate from arriving at the destination.
“If they are successful in that, they can win uncontested,” he said. “I have already said that this could be done by our enemies. Who knows, I myself might be a victim of such a tactic, so that I will not reach Langkawi in time to be nominated as a candidate.
Tomorrow is nomination day at which prospective election candidates will file their papers. Mahathir, who is PH chairman, is the coalition’s candidate for Langkawi.
Mahathir apologised to his guests, which included representatives of Wanita Harapan, and the Chinese and Indian communities, at the high-tea at De Baron Resort this evening.
He said he was supposed to have arrived in Langkawi after Friday prayers. He and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, were already at Subang airport ready to board the aircraft when he was informed that the plane could not take off because of a punctured tyre.
(Subang SkyPark, operators of the business aviation centre at Subang, declined to comment on Mahathir’s remarks. “Sorry. We cannot comment on this,” a SkyPark employee told FMT before ending the call.)
“But thank God, I was able to borrow an aircraft from my friend to continue my journey to Langkawi,” Mahathir said. “Maybe he had not gotten a warning from the government to not lend his aircraft to me,” he said
After having served in Kubang Pasu, Kedah, for seven terms, Mahathir is making his debut in Langkawi. He faces two rivals, Nawawi Ahmad of Barisan Nasional and Zubir Ahmad of PAS.
