“I spoke to Dr Mahathir, he told me the police went to Najib’s house to look for documents.

“I agree. We must follow the due process, regardless of how we feel,” he said at a speech in his Segambut home today.

Anwar, who was released and pardoned yesterday of sodomy charges three years ago, said retributive justice must be avoided and the rule of law, not the rule of the jungle must prevail.

Following BN’s crushing defeat in the recently-concluded election, Najib and his wife, Rosmah Mansor, were barred from leaving the country after the government reopened investigations into a multi-billion-dollar graft scandal at state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Yesterday, police carried out late-night raids at Najib’s private residence which led to Anwar’s daughter, Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar, and Amanah’s Khalid Samad criticising such action.

Najib’s lawyer, Harpal Singh Grewal, claimed the police raid constituted harassment.

Police also conducted a raid on Najib’s luxury condominium on Jalan Raja Chulan here tonight.

Mahathir said his government will follow the rule of law when it comes to action against his predecessor. Commenting on the late-night police raid, he said he wanted “people to be treated decently” and didn’t know the police would raid Najib’s house at night.

“The police have their standard operating procedures.”
