GEORGE TOWN:
PKR will use electronic voting this year when the party’s 800,000 members choose their leaders at the PKR elections in August and September, the party’s secretary-general, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, said today.

An online e-voting system had been developed and was being tested to rectify any problem that might arise before it is used for the party elections.

Saifuddin noted that PKR was the only party that granted every member a direct vote in choosing party leaders.

“In the previous two-party elections, we used paper ballots for the voting process. This time there are no more paper ballots but we go online immediately.

“The party members only need to be present at the voting centres and present their identity cards to confirm their memberships before proceeding to the gadgets we’ll provide to vote by clicking on the candidates they want,” he said.

Saifuddin, who is domestic trade and consumer affairs minister, spoke to reporters after visiting the Bayan Baru market near here today.

He said the election also did not require ballots to be tabled and counted. Every vote would be counted in the system as the party member voted, and the full results would be announced by the PKR election committee after the voting process was completed.

Saifuddin said PKR planned to carry out the polling process according to zones. Close preparations were being made so that it would run smoothly.

“PKR received over 300,000 new members from May 9 to June 26, and now we have more than 800,000 members, all of whom will vote at this election.

“I hope they will show good discipline during the election because we are now a party in government, “he said.
