KUALA LUMPUR:
The lawyer for former intelligence chief Hasanah Ab Hamid today clarified that her RM50 million criminal breach of trust (CBT) charge is not related to 1MDB.

Shaharudin Ali said Hasanah was only facing a charge of misappropriation of government funds.

“I did not see any other charges beside the CBT. She was not involved in any 1MDB issue and her case today has nothing to do with 1MDB or its subsidiaries,” he said outside the Sessions Court.

Hasanah, who once headed the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation, claimed trial to misappropriating RM50 million in government funds.

She was said to have committed the offence at the Prime Minister’s Department between April 30 and May 9.

If found guilty, she could be fined or jailed for between two and 20 years.

She posted RM500,000 bail and was told by the court to surrender her passport.

Shaharudin said the RM50 million in “government funds” in the charge could be questioned in court.

Regarding a leaked letter she had sent to the US just before the general election, Shaharudin said: “This is something confidential and it is not suitable to be debated in open court.”

Hasanah entered the spotlight after the May 9 general election when a letter written to Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director Gina Haspel asking for Washington’s support for Barisan Nasional was leaked to the public.

She was arrested in August, reportedly in connection with the alleged misappropriation of government funds for the election.

Hasanah’s letter to the CIA was investigated by the police as well, but Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun did not reveal details of the probe.
