Mahathir upbeat about upcoming budget

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the people need to put aside their differences and work together to rebuild the nation.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The 2019 budget which will be tabled next week will put Malaysia on a “stronger footing” for the coming years, says Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In his keynote address at the 31st International Federation of Tech Analyst Annual Conference, Mahathir said this would ultimately ensure the prosperity of the people and the next generation.

He said that global challenges, including the United States and China trade war, had resulted in a volatile market, spooked trade markets and sent shockwaves through emerging economies.

But, he said, despite these global challenges and uncertainties, Malaysia’s economy is able to “absorb and navigate” through them.

He said Putrajaya’s policies had always been business friendly and that it was responsive to new ideas and suggestions.

“We are in the midst of restructuring and it needs to be done to prepare our capacity to absorb global shocks or financial turbulence ahead.

“The government is confident that our new policies will create a stronger base and balance between prudent spending and ensuring the private sector is given a strong boost,” he said adding that the new budget had been designed to place Malaysia in a better position.

Mahathir said the government wants to assure investors that any policies won’t be detrimental to businesses and ventures.

In moving forward, Mahathir urged the people to put aside their differences and work together to rebuild the nation.

“If we can come together on May 9 to bring an end to an oppressive and corrupt government, surely we can come together to help the new government repair and rejuvenate the country.”
