No plans to merge Felda and Felcra, says Azmin

The economic affairs minister says a White Paper on Felda's management will be presented next month.

Felda has been dogged by several financial irregularities.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Economic Affairs Minister Mohamed Azmin Ali has dismissed speculation of a possible merger between the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra).

He said there are currently no plans from the Pakatan Harapan government for such a move.

Azmin said a White Paper will be presented next month on Felda’s management.

“We will get the detailed information with regards to Felda and it will be tabled in a White Paper in Parliament in December.

“Any action will be taken based on the White Paper, so there are no plans to merge (Felda) with Felcra,” he said at the Parliament lobby.

It was earlier reported that the government would table a White Paper on Felda in Parliament which would likely contain proposals to restore proper financial management and governance at Felda.

One of these proposals was said to be a possible merger with Felcra.

In August, Azmin said the government would table a report on the financial problems plaguing Felda as well as its recovery plans for the agency.

He said Putrajaya wanted to get to the bottom of Felda’s cash flow problems which he attributed to poor management by the previous Barisan Nasional administration.

Putrajaya’s decision to table the White Paper comes months after the Council of Eminent Persons agreed to the establishment of a Royal Commission of Inquiry to probe Felda, which has been dogged by several financial irregularities.
