Malaysia rolls out red carpet for Pakistan PM

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will meet with Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Shah during his two-day visit, among others.

SEPANG: Malaysia has rolled out the red carpet for Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan who arrived yesterday for a two-day official visit.

The special aircraft carrying the prime minister from Karachi landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 11.35pm.

He was received at the Bunga Raya Complex by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Md Farid Md Rafik, Deputy Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya and Pakistan’s high commissioner to Malaysia, Muhammed Nafees Zakaria.

In a statement, Wisma Putra said the visit, Imran Khan’s first official trip to Malaysia since assuming office in August, was at the invitation of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Imran Khan will meet with Mahathir to review bilateral relations and cooperation and identify new areas for future collaboration.

According to Wisma Putra, he will be accorded a welcoming ceremony before attending a restricted meeting with Mahathir at the prime minister’s office, followed by a delegation meeting.

The two leaders will also witness the signing of an agreement by the governments of Malaysia and Pakistan at the Prime Minister’s Office on the partial abolition of visas for travel between the countries.

Wisma Putra said Imran Khan is also scheduled to have an audience with Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Nazrin Shah, who is performing the functions of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He is also scheduled to visit the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission headquarters here.

In 2017, total bilateral trade between the two countries stood at RM5.76 billion, an increase of 3.5% compared to 2016. Pakistan is Malaysia’s third largest trading partner among South Asian countries.
