Temple scuffle: Firemen take an hour to douse torched vehicles

SHAH ALAM: It took 12 firefighters about an hour to douse the blaze after several vehicles were torched during a scuffle between two groups at a Hindu temple in USJ 25 early today.

Petaling Zone operations officer Asst Supt Muhammad Zaikunor Afendi Muhammad Nordin said 18 cars and two motorcycles were set on fire during the incident which took place at about 2am.

The 12 firefighters were deployed in two trucks from the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station. They arrived at the scene in the vicinity of the Sri Maha Mariamman temple at 4.53am.

“The fires were doused at about 6am. We were informed by the police that two people were injured in the incident,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Muhammad Zaikunor Afendi said an investigation was being conducted into the damage inflicted during the incident.

As at noon, he added, the firefighters were still at the temple to assist the police in their investigation.

The police have reportedly arrested two men in their 30s to facilitate a probe into the commotion that took place at the temple.

They were picked up at the Serdang Hospital when seeking treatment for injuries suffered during the incident.

Video clips of the scuffle, which caused massive traffic congestion in the vicinity, went viral on social media early today.

The temple was slated for relocation on Nov 22 according to a consent judgment on March 11, 2014, at the Shah Alam High Court.
