Election Commission chairman Azhar Harun announced the date today at a press conference, adding the candidates can campaign from the day of nominations till the Jan 25 midnight.
Jan 22 has been set for early voting.
Last month, the Election Court revoked Barisan Nasional’s victory in the May 9 general election after it found that money was used during the campaign to buy votes.
MIC’s C Sivarraajh, who won the seat, said he would not challenge the election court’s decision, adding that BN would fight for the cause of the people in a by-election rather than going to the Federal Court.
Cameron Highlands has traditionally been an MIC seat. Sivarraajh had won the constituency with a 567-vote majority.
Azhar said the electoral roll to be used is as of the third quarter of this year, updated on Dec 14.
He said there were a total of 32,009 registered voters, including 247 early voters and 12 absentee voters. There are also 385 disabled voters.
A total of 811 election officers will handle the by-election in 31 polling centres, with an allocation of RM3.5 million.
Azhar also said a live telecast of the vote tallying would be held, adding that it would depend on the quality of the broadband infrastructure in Cameron Highlands.
