KUALA LUMPUR:
Police will reject any move to legalise the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in Malaysia, following the move in Thailand to allow such products.

Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said the move would cause various problems in this country, and complicate the problem of drug abuse and trafficking.

“We are also worried about the possibility of marijuana smuggled into this country,” he said.

He said following the Thai move to de-legalise marijuana in medicine, Malaysian police are working to strengthen control along the borders to prevent smuggling of marijuana and other types of drugs.

Thailand passed amendments to its narcotics regulation on the use of marijuana and ketum, saying it was no longer an offence to use them for medicinal purposes.
