PUTRAJAYA:
Khat is an art form and does not involve any religious element, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said today, as controversy continued to rage over the calligraphic form of Jawi.

She said she is aware of the Chinese community’s concern about the government’s decision to introduce khat as part of the Bahasa Melayu subject in Year Four next year.

“We will discuss it further, but the thing is it is an art form,” she told reporters in response to questions about objections to the study of Jawi calligraphy.

Dr Wan Azizah spoke to reporters after opening a creative video competition and questionnaire on sexual harassment.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said that the government would proceed to include the study of khat in the Year Four Bahasa Melayu subject as objections came from only a small segment of society.

Dr Wan Azizah said she took note of the prime minister’s statement but will meet him for an in-depth discussion on the matter.
