Jho Low on ‘an island’ but not Cyprus, says top cop

IGP Abdul Hamid Bador says it doesn't make sense for the fugitive businessman to be hiding in Cyprus.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Top cop Abdul Hamid Bador today rubbished the notion that Low Taek Jho is hiding in Cyprus, just days after news that the fugitive businessman obtained a Cypriot passport in 2015.

When asked if Low, better known as Jho Low, could be seeking refuge in Cyprus, he said no.

“Why go there? He looks different, people would easily spot him,” he said, referring to claims that Jho Low had undergone plastic surgery.

When asked if he knew where Jho Low is hiding, Hamid said: “It’s an island.” However, he declined to reveal further details.

Speaking in a press conference at the Royal Malaysian Police College here, Hamid said it was impossible for Jho Low to leave the country he is currently hiding in, but that he would do everything it takes to bring him back to Malaysia to face the law.

“I’m using a lot of ways to bring him back, not just official,” he added. “Semi-official ways as well.

“My patience has limits when I’m negotiating with the said country, because we gave them our full cooperation in all issues pertaining to policing.

“I’m extremely disappointed when my request isn’t entertained, and they give excuses like ‘he went through plastic surgery’, ‘he has left and gone to Cyprus’ or ‘he has gone to UAE’, which doesn’t make sense at all.”

Based on the information he has, Hamid added, Jho Low remains in the country in question.

He also sought to clarify his remarks on Nov 4 in which he reportedly said Jho Low now “looks like a bear and walks like a wild ox”.

“They said it’s possible that he has undergone plastic surgery. That was the excuse given to me. So I said in Tawau that I cannot accept the excuse they gave because the world is so advanced now that it’s easy to track people down.

“If the excuse is given that he underwent plastic surgery, I asked if the doctor is so skilful that he can change someone to look like a bear.

“I didn’t say ‘he looks like a bear’ or, when we see him walking from behind, he looks like a wild ox walking. That’s what I meant.”
