AMPANG:
Two policemen have been remanded for two days for allegedly extorting RM1,400 from a grocery shop owner and his wife for not wearing a face mask when conducting business.

They surrendered themselves to the investigating officer yesterday following a report lodged by the shop proprietor on Oct 18.

Magistrate Farah Nasihah Annuar today allowed the policemen to be held for two days for police to complete their probe into the extortion allegation.

Lawyer K Shalvin represented the suspects.

Those found guilty can be jailed up to 10 years, a fine or with whipping or with any two of such punishments.

The policemen, in plain clothes, allegedly entered the shop here and found the couple conducting business without wearing face masks.

The proprietor is said to have paid the money to avoid arrest for violating the conditional movement control order (CMCO) imposed in Selangor and the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya since Oct 14.
