Night markets, barbers and car wash allowed to open

Senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said business operators can open until 10pm but must enforce strict SOPs.

Only haircuts will be allowed in barbershops and hair salons.
PETALING JAYA:
Night markets, barbershops and hair salons, as well as car wash centres will be allowed to open from tomorrow.

They will be allowed to operate until 10pm, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob has announced, adding that only haircuts would be allowed in barbershops and hair salons.

He said the decision was made considering that there have been no new clusters originating from these businesses.

However, he said the shops will be asked to close immediately if there were any positive Covid-19 cases or if business owners breached the standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Elaborating further, he said night markets are allowed to open between 4pm and 10pm.

“Stalls must be stationed at least one metre apart, with different entry and exit points. There will also be strict monitoring by RELA officers,” Ismail added.

As for barbers and hair salons, they are only allowed to cut and wash hair.

“Facials and other beauty services are not allowed,” he said.

He added that staff must wear personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks.

“It would be even better if the hairstylists and barbers wear both face masks and face shields,” he said, adding that all equipment must be sanitised after serving a customer.

Meanwhile, on other sectors that have yet to reopen, he said discussions are ongoing.

“The government has been discussing with the health ministry and the National Security Council to allow the reopening of other sectors and activities, including retail and sports.

“If the health ministry is of the opinion that the risk is low, then there is a possibility these sectors and activities will be allowed to resume operations,” he said.

Speaking on a different matter, Ismail said the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) at the detention block of the Pekan Nenas immigration depot and its staff quarters in Pontian, Johor will end today.

On MCO-related offences yesterday, Ismail said police arrested 731 people, of whom 709 were given compounds and 19 remanded. Three were given bail.

Ismail also said enforcement authorities nabbed 20 illegal immigrants and seized 14 vehicles under Op Benteng. They also arrested one smuggler (tekong).

There were 537 roadblocks set up for monitoring as part of the border surveillance operation yesterday.
