It’s fake, Shopee says of Covid-19 vaccine ‘sold’ on site

The online shopping platform says the image had been doctored.

The government is offering vaccines for free so any ad offering vaccines for sale, like the fake one on social media, is likely to be a scam.
PETALING JAYA:
Online shopping platform Shopee has clarified that an image depicting the purported sale of a Covid-19 vaccine on its site, currently making its rounds on social media, is fake.

Shopee said there was no such listing on its site.

“The author of the tweet has since confirmed that the image was doctored and indeed fake,” it said in a statement this afternoon.

The government, it said, was also aware of the fake news.

Yesterday, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Zainuddin Yaacob said he did not dismiss the possibility that fake advertisements offering Covid-19 vaccines will crop up in future.

He said that since the government was providing Covid-19 vaccines for free, “offers to sell vaccines may be a scam”.
