Stay ‘selamat’ and avoid crowds for Hari Raya, says Noor Hisham

Health director-general says there are still 129 active community clusters.

Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says 78.4% of Covid-19 cases were asymptomatic, which posed a high risk of virus transmissions if Hari Raya visits are allowed.
PETALING JAYA:
With hours to go before the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations begin in earnest, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has reminded the public to comply with the SOPs, in light of the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, and to stay selamat (safe).

Noor Hisham advised the people to avoid attending any large gatherings, including Hari Raya prayers beyond the stipulated limit of people. Malaysians were also asked to postpone any visiting activities, including visits to graves.

“It is worth noting that, this year alone, there has been a significant increase in clusters. To date, the total number of community clusters is 435, with 129 still active,” he said in a statement.

According to him, the community clusters were caused by infections from family members or close contacts, celebrations, funerals, weddings and other social activities.

Noor Hisham said 78.4% of Covid-19 cases were asymptomatic, which posed a high risk of virus transmissions if Hari Raya visits were still allowed.

The number of sporadic cases have also increased by 70%, he added.

“The health ministry hopes the community understands this situation and heeds the advice given, for our own good. Covid-19 does not recognise any victims, places and time. Anyone can be infected if they are careless.”

In conjunction with International Nurses Day today, Noor Hisham also thanked all nurses for their services and dedication to the country, especially throughout the pandemic.
