PUTRAJAYA: The number of new Covid-19 cases and hospital admissions is expected to decline next month (August) by which time 40% of the country’s adult population will be fully vaccinated, immunisation programme (PICK) coordinating minister Khairy Jamaluddin said today.
He said the hospital admission rate for elderly people had already shown a declining trend, based on data from Sungai Buloh Hospital which showed a downward trend in the admissions of elderly Category Four and Five patients, as the second phase of the national immunisation programme got under way.
“The Covid-19 vaccine is indeed an important protective shield against the virus,” he said in an interview with the media recently.
Khairy said fewer people now had doubts about the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine as many people were registering to get vaccinated.

“Maybe there are those who do not want the vaccine because they want to take other medicines, but when (we) announce the things that will be allowed for those who are fully vaccinated, more people will come and get their vaccination,” he said.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the government would soon announce relaxation of movement restrictions for those who are fully vaccinated. He said the relaxation of the rules would allow more “breathing space” for the people to enjoy a fuller life.
Khairy was asked about the need for a possible third booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. He said the matter would be discussed at a meeting of the vaccine supply committee next week. The technical working group would make some recommendations.
