20,837 Covid-19 cases, 211 deaths

Penang, Perlis, Sabah, Kelantan and Johor see record-high cases today.

PETALING JAYA:
The health ministry has reported 20,837 Covid-19 cases and 211 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 18,613 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 1,316,336.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 1,593,602.

There are 262,713 active cases with 1,063 patients being treated in intensive care and 511 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 211 deaths take the number of fatalities to 14,553.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases with 4,645, followed by Sabah (3,376), Penang (2,054), Kedah (1,772), Johor (1,743), Kelantan (1,422), Sarawak (1,543), Kuala Lumpur (1,284), Perak (1,242), Pahang (521), Melaka (396), Terengganu (383), Negeri Sembilan (351), Perlis (74), Putrajaya (27) and Labuan (4).

Penang, Perlis, Sabah, Kelantan and Johor recorded all-time highs in the number of cases today.

There were 20,815 local infections today, involving 17,440 Malaysians and 3,375 foreigners, as well as 22 imported cases.

The 211 who died comprised 187 Malaysians and 24 foreigners. All but 42 had existing medical conditions while 40 were brought in dead.

Johor reported the highest number of deaths with 41, followed by Selangor (36), Kedah (32), Penang (23), Sabah (17), Perak (16), Negeri Sembilan (12), Kuala Lumpur (10), Pahang (9), Terengganu (5), Melaka (3), Kelantan (3), Perlis (2) and Sarawak (2).

Noor Hisham also said that as of yesterday, the country’s Covid-19 infectivity rate was at 1.01.

Sarawak recorded the highest R-nought level with 1.26. Other states and federal territories that recorded R0 levels above 1 were Perlis (1.25), Sabah (1.19), Penang (1.14), Kelantan (1.10), Kedah (1.08), Perak (1.06), Terengganu (1.06), Johor (1.05), Melaka (1.05) and Pahang (1.01).

Some 98.3% of today’s cases are Category 1 and 2, while 81.3% of the overall cases involved individuals who either have not been vaccinated or have not been fully vaccinated.
