Court orders home ministry to register Muda in 14 days

PETALING JAYA:
The Kuala Lumpur High Court has ordered the home ministry to register Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman’s party, Muda, within the next two weeks.

The home ministry was also instructed to pay RM10,000 to Muda to compensate for legal fees, the party said in a Twitter post today.

Earlier this year, the Registrar of Societies (RoS) rejected Muda’s application to be registered as a political party but did not provide any specific reason for the decision.

Muda then filed an appeal to home minister Hamzah Zainudin, though this was also rejected without any reason given.

One month later, the High Court allowed Muda to proceed with a judicial review against the government’s refusal to register it as a political party.

According to Muda vice-president Lim Wei Jet, the High Court viewed the initial reason given by the home ministry in not registering the party – that the party is prejudicial to national security – as baseless.

“We thank the court and we also hope that the government will not appeal the decision, but instead allow Muda to be registered in order for democracy to prevail,” he told reporters and party supporters outside the court complex.

A visibly emotional party president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman expressed his gratitude to the court for its verdict.

“Today’s victory is not only for Muda but for democracy because finally, we have gotten a channel to voice out our opinions and criticisms for the good of our beloved country.

“For the last one and a half years, we (Muda) went through a lot of challenges and obstacles, including prosecutions and threats. It was unbelievable.

“But today’s court decision has made everything worth it,” he said.

Syed Saddiq added that Muda is fighting for a Malaysia that is “developed, dignified, and represents all Malaysians.”

“We want to build a country that is a home for all Malaysians regardless of their age, wealth status, race, religion, and their political affiliations,” he said.

He then made a rallying cry to his party members and supporters saying “our battle and journey has just begun.”

“You will carry the torches of Muda to the whole country. We do not have money or political influence, therefore we need to work 100 times harder,” he said to cheers from the supporters.

Syed Saddiq also urged more Malaysians to join the party.
