PETALING JAYA: Three representatives from Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) have been summoned by the police to give a statement on a protest the group organised outside the High Commission of Singapore last Saturday to oppose the execution of Malaysian Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam in the republic.
In a statement today, the group said chief coordinator Zaid Malek and volunteers Mahajoth Singh and Nabila Khairuddin had been called in to give a statement to the police tomorrow.
“They will be giving their statements at the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 11am on Tuesday,” LFL said.
Speaking to FMT, Zaid said the police did not indicate what sections of the law the trio will be investigated under.
The lawyers protested against Nagaenthran’s impending execution on Wednesday.
The Anti-Death Penalty Asia Network (Adpan) and MIC Youth also held their own rallies outside the high commission, with the 150-strong crowd dispersing an hour after they had gathered at 4pm.
LFL previously said it hoped the protest would push the Malaysian government to intervene and bring Nagaenthran home through an international prisoner transfer programme to serve his sentence here.
Nagaenthran, 34, who is mentally disabled, was arrested in 2009 for trafficking 42.72gm of heroin into Singapore and was handed the death sentence the following year.
Believed to have an IQ of 69 — a level recognised as a disability — Nagaenthran had failed in his clemency bid, and his case has since sparked widespread criticism, both within Malaysia and internationally.
