Over 150 evacuated in Sabah, Sarawak over floods

The Sarawak disaster management committee is monitoring other areas prone to floods in Bintulu, as well as Sibu.

Two Sabah districts have been affected by floods, namely Penampang and Kunak, while the flood in Bintulu, Sarawak involved five villages.

The number of flood evacuees in Sabah has risen to 75 this morning, while 77 people have been evacuated in Bintulu, Sarawak.

According to Bernama, the Sabah disaster management committee said nine people were being housed at a relief centre at the Penampang Sports Complex Swimming Pool, which was set up at 3.30am this morning.

Meanwhile, 66 evacuees remained at the Kampung Airport Tun Fuad hall in Kunak.

In Sarawak, 77 people in five villages in Bintulu were evacuated to a relief centre at Dewan Suarah Bintulu last night after floods hit their villages following continuous rain since yesterday.

The Sarawak disaster management committee said the evacuees were from Kampung Kemunting, Kampung Assyakirin, Desa Damai, Kampung Baru and Bukit Orang.

“The water in the villages started to rise at about 8pm and the relief centre was opened at 12.54am (today) to accommodate the victims,” it said.

It said the committee was also monitoring other areas prone to floods in Bintulu, as well as Sibu.
