Chong said GPS’ component parties were members of Barisan Nasional up until 2018. He said voting for GPS was equivalent to voting for Umno.
In a statement, he said GPS showed its loyalty to Umno by joining BN in forming the government in March 2020, after the PH government fell, and in August 2021, following Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as the prime minister.
He also pointed out that GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg openly expressed hope that Ismail Sabri Yaakob would form a stable government after GE15.
“The question that every Sarawakian voter must ask before they cast their vote on Saturday is whether we want Umno back in power.
“If that’s not what we want, then we should avoid all possibility of returning Umno to power, and we must not vote for GPS,” he said.
Chong said that for PH to stand a good chance of winning GE15, Sarawakians must help the coalition retain the 10 seats it won in 2018.
“In a worst-case scenario, PH will need 22 seats from Sabah and Sarawak, and in the best-case scenario, 12 seats.
“For PH to win 22 seats in East Malaysia it may seem to be an insurmountable task, but winning 12 seats in East Malaysia is possible,” he said.
Previously, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said PH could only work with GPS and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah to form the next federal government should the need arise as cooperation with BN, Perikatan Nasional or Gerakan Tanah Air was out of the question.
