Cops checking if viral video of Russian couple atop Merdeka 118 is fake

The management of the skyscraper says strict controls throughout the tower's area would make it difficult for anyone to enter and climb to the peak.

The Russian couple, Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, are known for their daredevil stunts, having climbed several skyscrapers all over the world.
PETALING JAYA:
The police are investigating the authenticity of a viral video that supposedly shows a Russian couple climbing to the top of the Merdeka 118 high-rise in Kuala Lumpur last month.

“We are working with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (to confirm) the authenticity of the videos which were published on the ‘Sky Scraper City Forum’ website,” KL deputy police chief Yahaya Othman said in a Berita Harian report.

He did not rule out the possibility that the videos were fake.

“At the same time, the Dang Wangi district police are recording statements from the tower’s management, Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNB),” he said.

“Based on our initial investigations, PNB’s management said their strict controls throughout the tower’s area would make it difficult for anyone to enter and climb the tower.”

He added that the police have received a report from the tower’s management after a video of the couple climbing Merdeka 118 – the world’s second tallest building – went viral.

Yahaya said the police are also awaiting feedback from the immigration department about the couple’s entry into the country.

In a previous report, Yahaya said that the couple, Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau, will be summoned to have their statements recorded. He added that they would be investigated for trespassing.

The couple are known for their daredevil stunts, having climbed several skyscrapers all over the world.

On Dec 27, a photo of Beerkus and Nikolau on top of the high-rise was posted on SkyscraperCity.com.

The couple is believed to have accessed the tower’s stairs and climbed to the top before taking a picture by using a drone.
