Only 1-day hearing by apex court on Najib’s review bid

Najib Razak's application to review his SRC conviction and jail sentence had been scheduled to be heard on Jan 19, 20 and 26.

Najib Razak wants his SRC International appeal to be heard again before a new Federal Court panel.
PUTRAJAYA:
The Federal Court will hear Najib Razak’s bid to review his conviction and jail sentence in the RM42 million SRC International case for one day only on Jan 19.

Previously, the apex court had set Jan 19, 20 and 26 to hear the former prime minister’s review application.

In a letter to the defence and prosecution, it said the Jan 20 and 26 hearing dates had to be vacated as the judges will be hearing other cases on those days.

Najib filed the review application shortly after the Federal Court affirmed his conviction for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering in the SRC case on Aug 23 last year.

He was ordered to serve his 12-year jail sentence from that date.

In his review application, Najib wanted the court to set aside the Aug 23 decision and for the case to be reheard before a new panel.

He said he had been advised by his solicitors that the decision of the court was reviewable pursuant to Rule 137 of the Federal Court Rules 1995.

However, the prosecution contended that Najib had been given a fair hearing and that there had been no prejudgment of the merits of his final appeal.
