In a statement, the agriculture and food security ministry said the Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM) had given this assurance during a meeting between minister Mohamad Sabu and FLFAM president Tan Chee Hee.
“FLFAM has guaranteed that production will return to normal and the supply of chickens and eggs will be sufficient beginning this month,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The ministry will continue to engage with industry players to ensure the poultry and egg industry continues to be sustainable and there will always be sufficient food supply.”
The ministry said FLFAM had expressed its appreciation to the government for its support in finding a solution to solve problems faced by both industry players and consumers.
Last month, the government decided to import chicken eggs from India to meet the country’s growing demand.
Mohamad said this was necessary as local producers were unable to meet the demands of traders and consumers.
However, head of the Mydin hypermarket chain Ameer Ali Mydin said it did not make sense to import eggs considering that Malaysia is a net exporter.
He said if there was insufficient supply, the country should stop exporting eggs to Singapore and Hong Kong.
Ameer also said egg prices could go down further if hypermarkets were allowed to import eggs directly.
