At a press conference following the secretariat’s first meeting, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the three committees were namely, the strategy committee; the election committee and the monitoring committee.
The strategy committee will be tasked with countering lies, Anwar explained, such as accusing Putrajaya of inaction following the burning of the Quran by a right-wing politician.
“There were some religious leaders who claimed the government did nothing, when in truth we strongly condemned the act and commissioned the distribution of one million Qurans.”
The election committee will focus on the upcoming state elections, Anwar, who is also the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman said.
“This committee will deal with matters related to the polls, including seat allocations.”
Meanwhile, the monitoring committee will keep track of public sentiment and ensure that promises made in the manifestos are implemented as well as oversee issues related to the cost of living and national unity, Anwar said.
He said the secretariat would be headed by deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof and Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
However, Anwar said he would be chairing the monthly secretariat meeting.
“In addition to the weekly Cabinet meetings, the secretariat will give its views on the unity government’s policies and ensure that all views are taken into account when formulating policies,” Anwar said.
The unity government comprises PH, Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah.
