Censorship board says no jurisdiction over indie film ‘Mentega Terbang’

It says the film, described by religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar as going against the Islamic creed, is only available online.

‘Mentega Terbang’, which touches on the differences and similarities of the major religions in Malaysia, has drawn criticism from the public as well as artistes following its release.
PETALING JAYA:
The Film Censorship Board (LPF) says it has no jurisdiction over locally produced independent film “Mentega Terbang”.

The board said checks found that the film was not in its censorship records and was only available online.

“Therefore, the screening or streaming of the film ‘Mentega Terbang’ is outside the jurisdiction of the LPF,” it said in a statement today.

LPF clarified that under the Film Censorship Act 2002, it was tasked with the censorship of films and publicity materials that were distributed to the public, except through the internet.

However, it said it was examining all related aspects thoroughly before taking further action in relation to the film.

“LPF is always aware and committed to ensuring negative elements, including those going against Islam, are prevented from being aired, exhibited, disseminated, screened or distributed conventionally to the general public,” it said.

It said all complaints regarding the film may be channelled to the board’s office through email or the public complaints management system.

“Mentega Terbang”, which touches on the differences and similarities of the major religions in Malaysia, has drawn criticism from the public as well as artistes following its release on streaming platform Viu.

A police report has also been lodged over the flim.

Yesterday, religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar said the Islamic development department (Jakim) would meet the production team of “Mentega Terbang”.

Na’im said Jakim had reviewed the film’s content and found that it went against the Islamic creed.
