The former prime minister said Mukhriz was free to do as he deemed fit.
“We are a free country. He can do whatever he likes. Whether it will be well received is another question,’’ Mahathir told reporters after attending a dialogue at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here today.
On Thursday, Pejuang revealed it had applied to join the Muhyiddin Yassin-led coalition.
Mukhriz said then that joining PN would prevent a split in Malay votes in the upcoming state elections.
Last month, Mahathir and 12 other party leaders resigned from Pejuang, which he founded in 2020, following the party’s decision to withdraw from Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA).
Mahathir had formed GTA last year.
In October, Mahathir revealed that he had suggested an alliance with PN thinking that his counterpart, Muhyiddin, had “repented” after being toppled as prime minister by Umno MPs.
However, he said, Muhyiddin was “still arrogant and (still) wants to become the prime minister (again)”.
