PETALING JAYA:
Natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has defended the facts and figures he presented in Parliament last week on the size of Malay reserve land in Kedah.

On March 29, Nik Nazmi told the Dewan Rakyat the size of Malay reserve land in Kedah, Perak and Kuala Lumpur had decreased last year.

He said Malay reserve land in Kedah had dropped from 721,888.93ha in 2021 to 716,537.28ha.

However, Kedah menteri besar Sanusi Nor denied this, saying data as of Jan 19 showed that the state’s Malay reserve land had increased to 721,905.61ha.

Nik Nazmi today said the information he presented in Parliament was prepared by the department of the director-general of lands and mines (JKPTG), which collects annual data on Malay reserve land from the state governments.

“JKPTG did not receive any additional information from Kedah’s lands and mines office between Dec 1, 2022 and March 29, 2023,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Information about the increase in the size of Kedah’s Malay reserve land, as mentioned by YB Sik (Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman), was not shared with JKPTG.”

Attached to the Facebook post was a letter from Kedah’s lands and mines office, dated Nov 30, 2022, which Nik Nazmi said reflected the same figures he had provided in Parliament.

Earlier today, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul said he had received a motion submitted by Tarmizi urging action against Nik Nazmi for allegedly lying and issuing a false statement on the size of Malay reserve land in Kedah.

The issue of the size of Kedah’s Malay reserve land led to three MPs being ejected from the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

Nik Nazmi also hit back at Sanusi for denying that the state’s Malay reserve land had decreased.

Sanusi was reported to have said that data from the survey and mapping department (Jupem) had shown an increase since 1993 and that in January this year, Kedah had 721,905.61ha of Malay reserve land.
