PETALING JAYA: Deputy director-general of health Dr Radzi Abu Hassan has been appointed the new director-general, replacing Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah who retired on April 21.
Radzi was one of Noor Hisham’s three deputies previously and was in charge of research and technical support.
Health minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said Radzi has extensive experience in the public healthcare service and that his appointment was based on his qualifications.
He had served as the head of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah’s medical department in the past and as Kedah’s medical lead coordinator.
Zaliha said Radzi had also led Kedah’s clinical research centre.
“With the experience, knowledge, expertise and credibility that Radzi brings, I am confident that we can work well as a team to ensure the agenda of reforming the national healthcare system can be implemented holistically.
“I congratulate Radzi on his appointment,” she said in a statement.
Noor Hisham retired last Friday after serving the health ministry for 35 years.
He had been regarded as a national hero when the country faced the Covid-19 pandemic. He served as director-general for 10 years.
