PETALING JAYA:
Improprieties discovered in the health ministry’s procurements during the pandemic are not linked to the emergency declared by then prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin, a Bersatu MP said.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal said the leakages revealed by the 2021 Auditor-General’s (A-G) Report were the result of “procedural and governance factors” within the ministry.

The Machang MP said this in a letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul.

He also sought to refer DAP’s RSN Rayer to the Rights and Privileges Committee for allegedly making “malicious insinuations” and “misleading the Dewan”.

Yesterday, the Jelutong MP claimed that the 2021 suspension of Parliament had prevented MPs from debating the ministry’s procurement of 136 ventilators.

As a result, he said the government suffered more than RM13 million in losses when 108 of the ventilators were found to be faulty.

According to Wan Fayhsal, Rayer’s statement made “malicious insinuations” that violated Rule 36(6) of the Dewan’s standing orders.

He also accused Rayer of “misleading the Dewan” when he claimed that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had insulted the royalty.

“(Mahathir) has not been proven to have insulted any royals and was only questioned by police under Section 112 of the Penal Code.”

In the letter dated June 7, Rayer was also accused of misleading the Dewan when he claimed that the opposition had refused to debate the A-G’s Report because of its alleged involvement in the improprieties.

“Opposition MPs rejected the motion to debate the A-G’s Report because of inaccuracies in Dewan procedures and conventions,” the letter read.
