PETALING JAYA:
Umno vice-president Khaled Nordin has been appointed as the new defence minister in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s first Cabinet reshuffle.

Khaled, who previously served as higher education minister, takes over from Mohamad Hasan who will now serve as foreign minister. Mohamad is the deputy president of Umno.

Zambry Abdul Kadir, who previously served as foreign minister, has been reassigned to the higher education portfolio.

According to Berita Harian, Khaled expressed surprise at the change in his ministerial portfolio, saying he was “still shocked” by the reshuffle.

Umno vice-president Johari Ghani was appointed as plantation and commodities minister, taking over the portfolio previously held by deputy prime minister Fadillah Yusof.

Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan meanwhile was shifted from the finance ministry to the works ministry, serving as a deputy minister.

Beaufort MP Siti Aminah Aching was the sole Umno figure dropped from the lineup of ministers and deputies. She was previously deputy plantation and commodities minister.

Meanwhile, Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad is the new deputy women, family and community development minister. She takes over from Aiman Athirah Sabu, who was transferred to the local government development ministry.

Lipis MP Abdul Rahman Mohamad was also transferred as a deputy minister in the works ministry to the human resources ministry.
