In a statement, Wisma Putra said foreign minister Mohamad Hasan will be participating in the debate tomorrow to demonstrate Malaysia’s strong and unwavering support for Palestine.
“The foreign minister will advocate for the acceptance of the state of Palestine as a full member of the UN, to advance their inalienable rights to self-determination, national independence and sovereignty that have long been denied, on the basis of a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital,” it said.
At the security council, Wisma Putra said Mohamad will also reiterate Malaysia’s call for an immediate ceasefire, oppose forced displacement of Palestinians, and stress the urgent need for unhindered humanitarian aid in Gaza.
“Malaysia will demand accountability for Israel’s flagrant violations of international law,” it said.
While in New York, Wisma Putra added that Mohamad is scheduled to meet United Nations secretary-general António Guterres and express support for under-secretary-general, Sigrid Kaag, who has been appointed as the senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza.
Mohamad is also slated to lead the Malaysian delegation to the public hearing session to request the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion on Israel’s policies in the occupied Palestinian territory, scheduled to take place in The Hague, Netherlands from Feb 19.
“Malaysia is expected to deliver its oral statement on Feb 22. Malaysia had earlier submitted its written statement to ICJ on July 25, 2023, focusing on Israel’s continuous violation of the right to self-determination of the Palestinians,” Wisma Putra said.
