PETALING JAYA:
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has received a new lead in its Scorpene submarine probe, related to payments totalling RM42 million made by a local company without the knowledge of its board of directors.

According to a source, the RM42 million is part of a RM530 million contract for support services in relation to the purchase of the submarine.

The source said the RM42 million is believed to have been paid to companies owned by relatives of the company’s owner.

“MACC will call several witnesses as it continues its investigation,” the source said, adding that the anti-graft agency has identified the people involved and recorded their statements.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki was reported in April as saying the agency’s investigation into Malaysia’s acquisition of two French Scorpene submarines in 2002 was still ongoing.

He said MACC was in touch with parties overseas to obtain information on several transactions.
